About Mandalay Luxury Beachfront Apartments

Accommodation at Mandalay is self-contained and designed for independent-minded travellers. If you don’t want to be tied to a hotel restaurant timetable and prefer to explore the Port Douglas area on your own schedule, choosing one of their holiday apartments gives you the ideal place from which to do that. Free wireless internet makes it easy to research and book your next excursion, but if you’re having trouble deciding what to do next you can also just talk to the local experts at reception. You also get free-to-air and cable TV plus a DVD player, so it’s easy to stay entertained between excursions to the reefs.

Guests can choose from a selection of tropical style apartments, ranging from smaller but still spacious one bedroom apartments to palatial penthouse suites. The larger apartments accommodate up to six guests each, so they are perfect for families travelling together. Each apartment comes with its own complete kitchen and laundry facilities as well as dedicated dining and lounge areas, so they really are self-contained homes. You also get your own private and furnished balcony, the perfect place to relax on a warm North Queensland evening. Opting for a beachfront apartment also gives you your own patio overlooking the pool or gardens, plus a two person spa bath. All apartments are air-conditioned as well, providing a welcome escape from the sun on hotter days.

Limited, but high quality. Mandalay features a pair of large swimming pools, one with lap lanes and one just for relaxing. Each one also has its own spa. The poolside sun loungers are shaded by palm trees and hanging sails, adding to the atmosphere of the hotel’s lush tropical gardens. If you’d rather work up a sweat than lie in the shade, the hotel also has tennis courts where you can get in a game. Racquets and balls are available for hire at reception, along with bikes, strollers, rollaways, and beach towels. Even if you just want advice on your itinerary or help booking a tour of the reefs, the experts at the front desk will be happy to help you out. They are also able to help arrange shuttle bus transfers to and from Cairns Airport, but you can use their secure parking facilities if you bring your own vehicle.

The big amenity that you won’t find at Mandalay is a restaurant. The apartments are strictly self-catering. The hotel does have barbeque equipment, though, and the full kitchens in each apartment make it easy to prepare your own meals. It’s also within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants, so the lack of a restaurant shouldn’t be an inconvenience.

It would be difficult to be much closer to Four Mile Beach than the Mandalay is, at least not without getting your feet wet. A private tree-lined walkway leads from the hotel right down to the sand, so you can always find your way there and back again. Given how iconic this location is, you’ll probably be using this walkway a lot.

The short walk to the beach isn’t the only good thing about the Mandalay’s location, either. It’s just a short walk to Port Douglas’ best bars, restaurants, and shops, but still at the quiet end of town. Despite how close you are to everything the hotel isn’t on the main road, and so it can still feel secluded thanks to its tropical gardens and quieter location.

Door rates for smaller apartments are fairly expensive, especially during the high season. Booked through the hotel website, a one bedroom apartment will cost just under $400 per night. For the larger three bedroom apartments, though, rates are actually relatively low compared to similar accommodation at other hotels in the area. A regular three bedroom apartment will cost you less than $500 per night, although you will have to pay more than that if you want a beachfront or executive suite. If you are bringing the whole family, staying at the Mandalay might be a very good decision.

When budgeting for a stay at the Mandalay, remember that you will also be providing your own meals.  This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Hotel restaurants and bars can often be quite expensive, and so going this self-catering route can give you a lot more control over how much you spend.
